Government: Decisions and Actions

Yulia Tymoshenko’s Address to Ukrainian Nation

16.02.2010

The second round of voting is over and I want to express my greatest gratitude to those, who supported me in these tough times. I was supported by your trust, love, votes, participation in electoral monitoring, struggle for life of dignity. I also give a deep bow to those, who prayed for Ukraine in this difficult moment and who prayed for our victory. Let there be no doubts that we are the ones who won!

But just like in 2004, our opponents showed they are not able to be elected by fair democratic rules. They perfectly realized they didn’t have a chance to get a legitimate majority vote.

We wasted no time. Since the ballot day we, along with lawyers, have been working hard on gathering the evidence and processing legal documents. Now I firmly declare you that elections have been rigged. Not it is not a political statement, it is clear and legal evaluation made by lawyers.

I’ll give you just one example, but it’s enough for you to understand everything. We managed to legally initiate the recounting of votes in ballot centers of Crimea. The results shocked us. All ballot centers rigged from 3 to 5% of votes for the benefit of Victor Yanukovych.

Generally, possible amount of election fraud reaches more than 1 million votes. This number is big enough to grant our victory. My decision to struggle is supported by latest evidences of individual observers from OSCE. They expressed the readiness to join our party in courts, providing video materials and own evaluations that prove that systematic falsifications took place during the elections.

I understand you are weary of constant political tug-of-war, and I want to live in a stable and peaceful Ukraine as much as you do. But if the democracy and the right to fair choice are not defended now, tomorrow we shall wake in another country, a country where dictatorship and fraud are rife and rampart. For the sake of our country’s future I beg you to give me your understanding and support. It doesn’t concern only me; it concerns all the honest-minded people, as it is about defending our freedom.

With all the proofs in my hand I have come to the only possible solution. We shall appeal against the results of the elections to court. I shall defend our nation and your choice on the basis of legal proofs.

Just like you I perfectly understand the way our courts work. But in the same time I am committed by my responsibility before you and Ukraine to struggle to right a wrong. Idleness means giving the Ukraine up in hands of criminals without a fight.

I won’t gather crowds. I won’t let public civil confrontations. Never in the history of Ukraine did our country need the stability and peace like it does no. That’s why legal appellations to courts is our way of fighting.

But I want to declare that Victor Yanukovych is not the President of Ukrainian nation. Whatever the consequences are, he shall never be a legitimate president.

I remain optimistic and keep hoping, that judges conducting the case shall treat the protection of laws and rights of people as an affair of honor.

There’s one more thing that motivates me to appeal to court. Even before the ultimate results were announced, Victor Yanukovych made a line of acute anti-Ukrainian statements that directly contradict the national interests of Ukraine. This is just the beginning.

The Party of Regions was caught red handed on dishonesty, when during recent voting on rise of social standards they didn’t support it. As you know, the whole pre-election PR campaign of Victor Yanukovych was based on this draft law.

That’s why I am ready to fight. I want to assure you I shall do my best to protect you, your children, and our homeland. I am asking for your support and understanding. I am with you as I always was.
