Test for "Europeanness"
The Government decided to apply to international financial and political organizations with the following request: to conduct an impartial and independent examination of the activities of the National Bank and Cabinet of Ministers within the periods of 2006-2007 and 2008-2009. The decision was made at the extraordinary session on Tuesday, the Vice Prime Minister, Hryhoriy Nemyrya, reported at the Government briefing.
He mentioned that Victor Yanukovych was the Prime Minister in 2006-2007, and in 2008-2009 the Post of the Prime Minister was occupied by Yulia Tymoshenko. The National Bank was chaired by Volodymyr Stelmakh in both cases.
Such an initiative is triggered by the intention to put the record straight and make a definite statement on the fiscal and monetary policy of the two Governments. This is the way we will be able to see the consequences of the work of the previous Government, which lays the foundation for the work of its successors.
Hryhoriy Nemyrya underscored that this should not be turned into a political issue, especially amid elections of the President and a new Government. It should be a peculiar kind of a test for both Governments, and the current Government is not afraid of the results of such an examination.
Besides, Hryhoriy Nemyrya believes that the future of democracy in Ukraine depends on the mechanism of the formation of the new Government. It will be a test for genuine rather that artificial “Europeanness” of Ukraine’s development.
